In American Government, students have been exploring the Legislative Branch. As part of that unit, we created a Mock Congress where the students became congressmen and attempted to draft and passed proposed bills and resolutions. They mimicked the legislative process as closely as they could. Everyone proposed numerous bills, they elected a Speaker of the House to oversee their legislative activities. They belong to a political party - with only one being in the majority. They worked as committees to revise bills, gather public feedback on their proposals and seek to ensure their legislation was detailed, clear, and articulate. We definitely saw politicking at play with opposing groups and viewpoints and some pretty serious debate. Many, many bills died all along the way. Some never made it out of committee. A number died on the house floor. Some were totally transformed from what they originally were designed to be. And some failed under the power of the Veto. In the end, several bills were signed into "law."

In High School Psychology class, we have concluded a unit on Learning and Thinking. As part of that unit we explored the concept of human creativity. Then, in order to challenge, explore, and express some individual creativity, the students were tasked with creating a Rube Goldberg Machine - something with many complex steps that are all meant to accomplish something rather simple. In this case, they needed to pop a balloon in 10 unique or bizarre steps. They did an amazing job, even if the balloon didn't always pop on the first try. Super proud of them! -Mr. Mayne

Four students from Lawson High school, visited the state capital in Jefferson City yesterday. They are part of a group called Youth with Vision. These amazing young ladies met with legislators, and were given a standing ovation on the house floor. Youth with Vision is sponsored by Tri-County Mental Health and works to fight the devastating effects of drug and alcohol use and promote mental wellness.
